Obstetrics Ultrasound

Under obstetrics ultrasound we have the following scans and screenings:

  • Dating Scans

Most pregnant women are rarely sure about the date of their “Last Monthly Period” (LMP) hence the dating scan aids in accurately providing this information with respect to the pregnant mother’s due date. The scan also finds out if you are having more than one baby (multiple pregnancies: twins, triplets, etc.). It is very important to know how far long your pregnancy is to ensure that the results of your nuchal translucency scan are accurate.

  • First Trimester Screenings

Seeing how healthy your baby is at this stage is very key. This ultrasound provides a risk assessment of you baby’s health & development as well as giving a risk valuation for Down syndrome.

Our specialist will talk you through the entire scan while adequately informing on you what they are looking at. Should the pregnant mother or couple have any questions the sonographer should be able to provide answers to their understanding.

  • Third Trimester Ultrasound Scans

When the pregnancy approaches 28 weeks onwards, the third trimester scan looks at the placenta situate, the fluid around baby and the baby’s growth. All babies are different and it is at this point where the pregnant mother is to find out whether the baby will be big or small.

Dopplers are also taken during this scan to evaluate placental function.

  • Anatomy Scans

The anatomy scan is important to monitor the development and growth of your baby including heart (focused on looking for holes and making sure the vessels are located correctly), spine, adequate brain development, nose, lips for cleft palate, legs and arms etc.

  • Gender Scans

Normally done after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The scan takes a short time where the pregnant mother to be is shown the baby. The gender can either be shown to you on the day of the scan or placed in an envelope for you to do a gender reveal at the time of your choosing.

General Ultrasound

General ultrasounds cover areas such as Pelvic, abdominal, abdominal pelvic, transvaginal regional, testicular/ testis, thyroid, breasts which are all reported by your consulting radiologist.

The scan plays and important role at spotting kidney defects, muscle and tendon tears, gall stones, fatty liver disease, cysts, liver tumors etc.

  • Vascular Ultrasound

Vascular ultrasounds are every so often referred to test for such things as carotid arteries, varicose veins and leg arteries. This will subsequently enable your doctor to treat vessel narrowing and prevent such ulcers etc.
